Real weight vs volumetric weight

Large boxes can increase delivery costs even when the product itself is light.

Three weight concepts shoppers should know

Actual weight is the weight measured on a scale. Volumetric weight is calculated from the dimensions of the box. Billable weight is the weight that the carrier uses to calculate the invoice. For many parcels these values are the same or close, but for large and light products they can differ significantly.

Carriers use volumetric weight because transport space is limited. A large box takes space in an aircraft, truck or warehouse even if it is light. For example, a pillow, lamp shade, toy, bag, shoe box or plastic household item may weigh little but occupy much more space than a compact product of the same actual weight.
